'2014 세계 태권도 한마당'이 어제부터 나흘간 경상북도 포항실내체육관에서 열리고 있다. 이번 대회는 역대 가장 많은 세계 53개국 3천400여명의 태권도 선수들이 참가했다. 이번 대회로 한국의 국기(國技)인 태권도가 국제 스포츠에 이어 국제 무예(武藝)로 발돋움하고 아울러 포항 경주 울산권이 삼국을 통일한 역사 문화전통의 뿌리이자 포항제철의 저력으로 한국 공업화를 이룬 원동력이 된 도시임을 국제사회에 널리 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.

태권도가 올림픽 종목으로 선정되면서 국제적으로 확산됐지만 태권도가 갖고 있는 무예적 진가는 상대적으로 저평가 되어온 게 사실이다. 이번 태권도 한마당 대회는 무예로서의 태권도 정신과 진가를 재조명하는데 기여

할 것으로 보인다. 외국 태권도인들도 대회 참가에 자부심을 가져도 될 것이다. 개최지인 포항과 인근 경주는 통일국가 신라의 유산과 화랑의 선무도(仙武道) 전통이 이어지고 있는 지역이다.

국내적으로는 생활체육으로, 국외적으로는 유망 스포츠 종목으로 확산된 태권도에 대해 정부도 정책지원을 아끼지 말아야 한다. 올림픽 정식종목으로 채택되었고, 현재 세계 수많은 국가에서 '한국어 구령'에 따라 태권도를 수련하고 있다. 중국은 국무원 기구로 국가체육총국이 있어 체육행정을 총괄한다. 일본이 일찌기 유도를 국기로 삼고 '유도대학'을 설립해 경쟁력 있는 유도기술을 개발하고 교육해서 유도 종주국으로 국제화에 성공한 것을 본받아야 한다.

최근 세월호 사태와 우리사회의 여러 병리적 현상은 정신자본의 빈곤에서 비롯됐다는 진단이다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 인문교육과 상무(尙武)정신을 고양해야 한다고 본다. 나라를 위해 의연하게 죽을 각오가 항시 돼 있는 옛 고구려인과 신라인의 화랑정신이 바로 그것이다. 상무정신이 있었다면 세월호 침몰시 선원들과 해양경찰은 앞 다투어 생명을 구하고 자신들도 살 수 있었을 것이 아닌가.

세계 최고 권위와 전통을 자랑하는 태권도 기술의 종합경연장인 태권도 한마당은 오늘 오후 KBS를 통해 전국에 생중계된다. 태권도 저변확대는 물론 포항시 홍보에도 크게 기여할 전망이다. 국내외 태권도인들은 국제 스포츠로 도약한 태권도의 철학과 정신을 드높이도록 최선을 다해야 할 것이다. 세계 태권도와 태권도인의 제전에 응원을 보낸다.

영문> The 2014 World Taekwondo hanmadang is held at Pohang Gymnasium for four days, starting yesterday. This year, the Taekwondo Hanmadang has 3,400 players from 53 nations which is the highest number of participating nations in its history. Through this competition it is expected that Taekwondo, which is the Korean national sport, will grow into an international martial art. Moreover, it will be a great opportunity to make Pohang, Gyeongju, Ulsan areas known to the international society as the roots of cultural tradition of the history which unified the Three Kingdoms, and as the cities which were the motive power of industrialization of Korea with the power of Pohang Iron & Steel Company.

Taekwondo has been globalized after its selection as an Olympics sport but it is true that its value as a true martial art has been undervalued. Taekwondo Hanmadang aims to shed new light on the spirit and value of the Taekwondo as a martial art. Therefore foreign Taekwondo participants should have self-esteem. The venue city, Pohang, and the nearby city, Gyeongju, are the areas where the heritage of Unified Silla and the tradition of Seonmudo are being continued.

The Government should make policy support sufficiently to Taekwondo, which has been spread as a sport for all domestically and as a promising sport internationally. It was selected as an Olympics sport, and it is practiced among various countries in the world at the word of 'Korean command.' China has General Administration of Sport that is responsible for sports administration. Japan made Judo its national sport, established 'University of Judo,' and developed and educated competitive Judo techniques, which made Japan success as the birthplace of Judo. We should follow these examples.

Various pathological phenomena in our society like the Sewol ferry affair comes from the poverty of mental capital. To solve this, humanities education and martialism should be enhanced, which is the Hwarang spirit of old people of Goguryeo and Silla who were always ready to die in dignity for the country. With martialism, when the Sewol ferry was sinking, the crews and maritime policemen would have rushed to save lives, then more people would have survived including themselves.

Taekwondo Hanmadang, which is a competition of Taekwondo techniques that has the World's best authority and tradition, will be broadcasted this afternoon by KBS. They hope to promote Taekwondo as well as Pohang city. All the Taekwondo players in the world should do their best to heighten the philosophy and the spirit of Taekwondo.
